PDAs... Where next?

After a long and reasonably happy association with Palm PDAs of various types, my Tungsten Tx has recently expired, thankfully not before I managed a full back up!

A new one will set me back £180 at Amazon, much more on the street. I have been alerted to the Ipod Touch as an alternative and after a demo in Leicester's new Apple store I am mightily impressed.

Questions:

Anyone had bad experiences with one?

Does anyone know of software that will allow transfer of eight years accumulated data in Palm-speak to Ipod-speak?

CoGS

Re: PDAs... Where next?

the touch is nice, but unless you're always within reach of free wi-fi, the iphone is much more useful.

Re: PDAs... Where next?

I bought a Touch last month as a replacement for the Palm PDA.

Wish I hadnt bothered - (as Cookie says - you have to be in WiFi range for it to be any use). Its OK as an MP3 or Games but absolutely useless for business applications.

I would go for another Palm.

Get the iPhone if you really want that slick interface - or consider the new Blackberry Storm. A really neat iPhone app is Evernote which allows you to keep notes synchronised between multiple devices and computers.

Re: PDAs... Where next?

Whooooaaaaa!!

No phones please!

I may be a PDA geek of 10 years standing but I have never entered into a mobile contract and never intend to!

Free wifi is freely (?) available in cities and more and more hostelries are offering it (even the Vic bikers' pub in Coalville now has a hotspot)

The problem with 'getting another Palm' is the only option for me is to get another Tx and, at a minimum of £179.99 they ain't cheap for what you get. Or don't. I've had this one for nigh on three years and in that time Palm have not developed a new platform (though they recently poached someone from Apple so in a year or two...). The world has moved on but Palm haven't. Yet. I guess I could just get the 8 (£165) or 16Gb (£214) as a stop gap and still have a good MP3 at the end? It's just having masses of calendar, contacts and memo data (not to mention Docs 2 Go) tied up on my desk>

True, there are issues with transferring data -who wants to deal with Outlook unless they really have to (specially after the comparatively slick Palm Desktop).

Ooooh, decisions decisions...

Feel free to continue

You can get most decent phones as a pay as you go item now.

Most PDA development has stopped as things like the Nokia E71 do more than your last Palm ever did.

Faced with a similar choice to you last year I went the phone route as it is ultimately cheaper and a phone contract is not an onerous thing. In addition, don't you need a mobile as you are a businessman?

Good lad That's me an you left in the world

I'm still on a T3 I bought s/h a few years back. Some of the non-Palm PDAs are better maybe with their MickySoft interface but the Palms are good no nonsense stuff. I was thinking of AN Other for future travels, but the old T3 and manual connect fold out keyboard is hard to beat for size, weight and whatnot.

Blx to the new all singing all dancing all in bin in a year or two time

Re: PDAs... Where next?

Palm, bless, have offered to repair the kn*ckered Tx for 143 euros, free collection and return so that's what I'll be doing in the new year. in the meantime, the 8GB Touch is looking favourite as an ancillary gadget given I don't have a functional MP3 (never could get on with the TX's on board one) and it has sooooo many nifty apps available through itunes. Or am I deluding myself?

Re: PDAs... Where next?

My second Tx is now showing it's age (heavy handed owner ) with a randomly numb screen. As I said before, too much data / history (>11 years ) so the lack of a suitable converter to iPhone/touch OS stoped me going down that route...

So, any opinions on the new Palm Pre?

Useful info, thanks mate. I have just successfully bid for some money to buy business equipment for my students and have been dithering between i-touch and PDA's. I cannot buy i-phones as I don't want to be paying out for their phone bills! I need them to be able to access business applications when out and about doing street surveys etc and get them used to the idea of conducting business using mobile technology. I assume then that PDA's are the best bet? Any advice very gratefully received.
